Educating (and Keeping up With) our Digital Natives

As a historian who works in education, I can tell you, the future, being guided by our digital natives, is here. Technology is reshaping how we conduct commerce, how our brains learn, and how we interact with others. Being educational leaders in technology and innovation is not an option; it is a necessity. That is why we work to embed technology in every classroom, and in every aspect of our curriculum, and why we are designing new, technology-based courses.

YouTube is filled with videos of infants as young as 17 months old being able to turn on and operate iPads. One of our own students is attempting to map the contents of his brain using an iPad mind-mapping function. He is finding new and interesting ways to enhance his own learning in class with the use of his tablet. Click here.

For years, CA students have been creating and selling apps. And they are not alone. Thomas Suarez, age 12, who in his recent TED Talk, apologetically said, “These days, students know a little more than teachers—when it comes to technology.” Click here.  Suarez suggests we should all embrace and take advantage of this. We have no choice; the future is here.
