Teaching About the "War on Terror"

On May 4, the Denver Post published a piece analyzing the response of young people to Osama bin Laden's death. For the story, the Post interviewed a number of students in my War on Terror class. As a history teacher, I feel fortunate to be able to teach specialized electives. It allows students to "go deep" into an area of interest. In this case, I have been teaching this class for seven years. It is an opportunity for students to think about the rise of Islamic terrorism and the American response to 9/11. It challenges students to think about a range of issues: America's role in the world, stereotyping, ethics and justice, international law, economic development, and fighting counter-insurgencies. Ultimately, I want my students to better understand our world and this critical national security challenge. From what they told the reporter, our students demonstrated a mature understanding of the significance of bin Laden's death. Click here for the Post's coverage.
