Sir Ken Robinson

Learn more from an important voice in education reform by checking out these talks by author and educator, Sir Ken Robinson.
Sir Ken Robinson is a major force in the debate on education reform.  I heard Robinson three years ago when he was the keynote speaker at the National Association of Indepdendent Schools' annual conference and was blown away by what he had to say.  He is a respected (and entertaining) lecturer, writer, and international advisor on education.  One of his major themes is to encourage educators to engage and foster (and not undermine) creativity and divergent thinking in our students.  He thinks deeply about teaching and what schools should be doing to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.  He has a fun way of presenting challenging ideas that are based on research and data.

At Colorado Academy, we are deeply interested in producing students who are critical thinkers and also creative in their approach to problem solving. Indeed, we have many programs that encourage creativity and innovation at CA.  It is critical for schools to think about the type of work and material with which we challenge our students.  The types of assessments we use are also important.  We are a school that is committed to doing all that we can to ensure that our students are prepared for work, study, and citizenship in the 21st century.  As Robinson notes, it is essential that we produce thinkers who can look at issues from a variety of perspectives and make orginal contributions.

I have attached links to two talks Robinson has given. One is a version of the same talk I saw him give a few years ago entitled, "Do Schools Kill Creativity?"  The second is an animated version of a talk on "Changing Education Paradigms."  You will find him highly entertaining, but also provocative and iconoclastic. The animated talk is particularly engaging and encourages teachers to stimulate "divergent thinking" in our students.  Take a little look and a listen; it will be worth your time.
