LS Class Leads, Snack Update, and Summer Packet Information

By Angie Crabtree
Dear Lower School Families,

What a fun day of celebrating and making art at Art Fest! We can’t wait to see the creativity on day two. Thank you to all the volunteers and the fabulous Art Department for sponsoring such a great event for our CA community.

Class Lead Inquiry for 2023-2024
The Parent Association and I are beginning to collect inquiries from parents who would like to submit their names for consideration as a Class Lead for the 2023-2024 school year. The primary role of the Class Lead is to support the families within the classroom, provide communication from school to home, and support the Lower School policies and procedures.

Each year, the Parent Association and I review the class lists and then review who is available to serve as a Class Lead. In some cases, there may be multiple volunteers in one classroom. We appreciate having so many volunteers and work to secure a class lead for each classroom.

If you are interested in sharing your interest in being considered as a Class Lead, please complete this form no later than Thursday, May 18. Class Leads will be assigned in August.

Lower School Snack Update
We are currently reviewing our Lower School snack policy for the upcoming year. Throughout this year, I have received feedback from families and students relating to snack choices, the sustainability concern of snack packaging and trash, and the potential for students to bring snack from home with school-approved guidelines.

Student Council has joined me in taking on this challenge and is currently working through the following:
  • how much trash does snack packaging create each day,
  • the availability of snack selections provided by our CA Dining Hall,
  • preferred and non-preferred snacks of students, and
  • the option of having an approved snack list for students so that they may bring a snack from home.
At this time, we have conducted a survey of the students to learn more from them about the preferred and non-preferred snack items. Our Operations Team has shared that our snack trash creates 5 extra-large bags of landfill trash each day. We will provide a survey next week for parents and guardians, so we may gather your input, too. The Student Council and I will continue to review all aspects of managing Lower School snacks and share a full snack update with families in August as we begin the school year.

Summer Packets for Grades Pre-K – 4
Summer work packets will be sent home with current students on Monday, May 22. New families will receive their summer work packets in the mail.

Kind regards and happy weekend,
Angie Crabtree
