Conferences, Great Debate, and Social Media Education for Students and Parents

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
Thanks to all for coming to our conferences. I hope you find/found our effort to put our students at the center of their learning helpful and informative. The more we ask students to be reflective and proactive during this formative time, the more likely it is that they recognize the benefit of putting their best foot forward as a learner. I know it is a commitment to leave work and other activities to attend in person. It is greatly appreciated.

On Wednesday, the Seventh Grade showcased student learning by hosting the Debate Finals. The debate is part of our Seventh Grade social studies program, which encourages students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. In this instance, the class chooses the debate topic and must support or defend their position based on the flip of a coin. This year’s topic was whether college athletes should be paid.

A neat twist to the finals is that the judges are previous winners, many of whom are now high school students. While ALL Seventh Graders are to be commended on their efforts, this year’s semi-finalists and finalists were Jordyn Bezoza, Charlotte Emerson, Mady Iten, Molly Lowe, Ella Sharma, Sysy Robinson, Bennett Neely, and Hendrik Jordaan. While it was an incredibly close final matchup, Jordyn Bezoza and Charlotte Emerson claimed the title.

Making good decisions about using technology, and social media in particular, is critical for young people.  To help this along, our Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School provide a variety of learning sessions via homeroom discussions, advisory conversations, technology sessions, a technology honor code—which is signed by MS students, and grade-level programming. As part of this effort, next week Lori Smith, a prominent speaker on social media issues and education, will present to both parents and students.  I have included a copy of the parent invitation below.

If I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Bill
