Tri 3 Information, Next Year's Course Requests, Principal Coffee Chat, more

By Max Delgado
Now that we’ve closed out the second trimester, I want to offer some details regarding the third trimester and the course request process for the 2023-2024 school year, which we will kick off during a Town Hall this Wednesday, February 22.

I also want to highlight the upcoming Principal Coffee Chat, which will take place in Knowles Hall on Tuesday, February 28, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Trimester transition
The second trimester ended on Wednesday, February 15—the day before February Break. Parents and guardians will be able to view Trimester 2 grades on Friday, March 3, at 4 p.m. Our third and final trimester of the year began on February 21, and ends on Friday, May 26.

Here are the steps to view your student’s Tri 2 grades:

  • Click on “Children,” then select your student’s name.
  • Click on the “Progress” tab.
  • Under Performance, click on “Report Cards.”
  • Click on Trimester 2.
  • The report will open in a new window.
Course request process for 2023-2024
All students in Grades 9-11 were given an overview of the course registration process during Town Hall on Wednesday, February 22. During this overview, we forecasted the year ahead and highlighted changes to next year’s offerings.

To help you track the process from home, we offer the 2023-2024 Curriculum Guide, which provides an important overview of our academic program, listing requirements and courses by department. As you review, please be mindful of the prerequisites and corequisites for each course. This document is also posted on the Upper School News Resource Board of the website (login required), and you may want to bookmark it.

To help students plan, we offer this Four-Year Curriculum Planning Guide as a reference. This form is for your information purposes and does not need to be submitted to the school. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if we can help in any way. Please note this is only for the classes of ’26, ’25, and ’24. Rising Ninth Graders and their families will receive a follow-up note from me soon with details relevant to them.

Important dates
Your student began the course request process for next year’s courses on Wednesday, February 22; the request process closes on March 18. We encourage students to carefully review the 2023-2024 Upper School Curriculum Guide and their course preferences with their families to help ensure all requests are thoughtful and well-informed.

During Advisor Conferences on Friday, March 9, students and families will have an opportunity to review their student’s course requests with their Advisor.

Special schedule on Monday, February 27 (F Day)
As part of our transition from Trimester 2 to Trimester 3, we will end class at 1 p.m., on Monday, February 27, following this schedule. We are only surrendering Long Advisory, meaning students will not lose any instructional time.

Principal Coffee Chat (please note the later start time)
For parents and guardians to gain a fuller understanding of events, topics, and initiatives that are driving life at the Upper School, I’ll be adding a series of “Coffee Chats” and a “State of the Upper School” in the coming months. Each event will be hosted in Knowles Hall, with timely agenda topics to be shared beforehand. But please save the dates for now!
  • Principal Coffee Chats:
    • Tuesday, February 28, 8:30-9:30 a.m., in Knowles Hall
    • Tuesday, April 25, 8:30-9:30 a.m., in Knowles Hall
  • State of the Upper School:
    • Thursday, May 11, 5:00-6:30 p.m., in Knowles Hall
Next Coffee Chat topic
As mentioned, our next Coffee Chat will take place on Tuesday, February 28, 8:30-9:30 a.m., and will focus on the Upper School daily schedule for 2023-2024. The chat will feature Sonia Arora (Director of College Counseling and Upper School Strategic Initiatives) and Katy Hills (Director of Visual & Performing Arts).

At the request of Mike Davis, both Sonia and Katy have led the Upper School faculty, students, and staff through a series of conversations regarding possible changes to the Upper School daily schedule for next year. As part of this work, they have drafted three versions of a schedule that we might adopt. While the final decision regarding what schedule we’ll adopt will happen later this spring, we want to offer parents and guardians an update on our conversations and the rationale behind the changes.

If you have any questions after reviewing the notes above, please contact your student’s grade-level dean or me.

Best,
