Parent Association Meeting and Open Door Morning

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
Thanks for joining us for yesterday’s Parent Association meeting. Our focus topic was social media and technology. We had a student panel composed of four Middle School students and two Upper Schoolers. The panel answered a variety of questions about their social media and technology use, and then we opened it up to questions from parents. While there are many possible “takeaways” from the meeting, a few for me included:
  • There are benefits of ongoing communication with your child about social media, technology use, your family’s values, and rules of use.
  • The use of social media is prevalent and ongoing, and students are finding both value and challenge: Value in the friendships and connection it facilitates, challenge in the drama and downsides of overuse/distraction.
  • Over time, students work to develop the skills to self-regulate their use of social media and tech in general.
  • Families should make conscious decisions about when it is the right time for your child to have a phone and/or use social media.
Please also remember that we have some wonderful resources here at school to help you navigate the “ups and downs” of social media. Depending on the circumstances, this may be someone like Laura Farmer in our tech department or Abby Johnson, our Middle School Counselor. While no one has all of the answers, we are here to support your child and family and help to navigate the sometimes choppy waters of social media and tech use.

Open Door Morning: I will be hosting my next Open Door Morning on Friday, February 3. I set aside time on these mornings to meet with parents and chat about what is on your mind. Sometimes parents just want to come by and say “hello.” Sometimes they have a question or two about our program. I truly want my door to be literally and figuratively open, as the quality of our communication has a positive impact on student learning and growth. Should you like to set up a 20-minute time slot, please contact Helen Romero, Middle School Administrative Assistant, by email at helen.romero@coloradoacademy.org.

If I can be helpful, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Bill
