Lower School collective book assignment

By Angie Crabtree
Dear Lower School Families,

We enjoyed a beautiful week of sunny days at school this week! I hope everyone enjoyed the Homecoming celebration last weekend at CA! It was fun to see the Bike Parade and so many happy families on the CA campus. A HUGE thanks to Whitney Ladd for leading the organization of an amazing event and the organization of volunteers for our Lower School Homecoming activities!

Our Favorite Day of the Year, by A.E. Ali
All 20 classrooms read the book, Our Favorite Day of the Year, this week. This is a heartwarming book, following a group of students from different backgrounds as they learn about one another throughout the year.

After reading the book, the teachers guided the students through a discussion using the following questions:
  • What is a holiday?
  • What holidays do you know about?
  • How can you get to know someone better?
  • How do holidays bring people together?
  • Why do you think we should learn about holidays that we may not celebrate?
  • For all of these celebrations, kids were with their families and friends. Why do you think this is?
  • Do you think that it is okay to be different than your friends? Why or why not?
  • Which of these holidays would you like to learn more about?
  • Do you have favorite days of the year that are not considered as a holiday?
Students completed an assignment in class to share about their favorite day of the school year. Each student also has a homework assignment to complete with their family. The assignment explores days that each family celebrates. The assignment is due on Monday, October 3.

We keep these trimester book assignments each year. At the conclusion of your child’s Fifth Grade year, the book assignments are compiled together. I lead the Fifth Graders through an activity of reflection relating to topics and how their ideas have evolved or changed through the years.

Lost and Found Reminder
Please ask your child to label their belongings—especially jackets and water bottles. Our Lost and Found is already overflowing.

Have a wonderful weekend!
