Homecoming, trips, and open doors

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
Fingers crossed for good weather tomorrow and into the weekend. Homecoming is always fun whether it is sunny or rainy, but let’s be honest, 75 and sunny is the best. Tomorrow is our Homecoming Assembly led by our Upper School students. This includes spirit-raising presentations and a fun relay. Thursday was our first MS Spirit Day, an afternoon filled with Middle School athletic contests. Our athletics team hosts a similar fun event in the winter and again next spring. It is a nice opportunity for our students to be celebrated.

Last week the Seventh and Eighth Grades were out and about. The Seventh Grade enjoyed an overnight community-building experience at Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Reports from the students and advisors were that it was great fun. Students participated in friend-raising activities, learned how to set up tents, and had a great hike. The Eighth Grade, on the other hand, was divided into patrols and headed off to Rocky Mountain National Park for three days and two nights. This was a full-blown backpacking extravaganza. Each small group of students was led by two Kent Mountain Adventure guides and a CA teacher. I know I speak for the other CA chaperones in saying what a wonderful time it was to be in the outdoors with our students. We backpacked, set up camp, cooked, played, got rained on a little bit, and generally had a great time learning outdoor skills while building community.

In other news, I am hosting my first Open Door Morning on Friday, October 7. This is an opportunity for parents to schedule a 20-minute chat with me to discuss our curriculum, other school-related topics, or simply to get to know one another a bit better. My door is often literally and always figuratively open; two-way communication about what is going well and not so well is essential to our success this year.

I hope everyone enjoys Homecoming this weekend. If you have any questions, or if I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Best,
Bill
