Seventh Grade Debate and Spring Break

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
The energy has been high in the Middle School the last couple of days. It could only be that Spring Break, a NO HOMEWORK vacation, is in the offing. Truth be told, I think the teachers and I are pretty excited about it as well. I hope it proves to be a chance for everyone to relax a bit, be with friends, have an adventure, and read a good book.

A highlight of this week was the Seventh Grade debate finals. This is such a great thinking exercise for our Middle School students. Each learns research skills, how to evaluate evidence, make an ARE (Argument, Reasoning, and Evidence) sandwich, rebut others’ arguments thoughtfully, and speak persuasively in front of one’s peers. Best, the decision of whether you are in favor or against a particular statement is determined by the flip of a coin. In other words, students need to be equally persuasive in favor or against the statement. This year the debate revolved around whether Artificial Intelligence was good or bad for society. GREAT topic for young people to ponder. Our congratulations this year go to our 2022 Debate Champions, Skye Leach and Brielle Burkett.

I hope everyone has a wonderful vacation. If I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Bill
