Conferences, cultural competency, and STAMP

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
Thanks to everyone who made conferences a high priority. Teachers are describing thoughtful conversations in which parents and teachers shared what is going well, as well as areas that need continued attention. Making progress between now and June is the name of the game, and close communication supports students to be successful. I hope you left your conference feeling confident in the efforts our teachers are putting in to support the long-term growth of our students, both academically and as a young person.

Last week, we had our largest group of students ever go to the STAMP Conference. STAMP stands for Students Taking Action and Making Progress and is a program facilitated by high school students, designed to help build responsive and inclusive school communities. Students attended workshops to learn more about identity, justice, inclusivity, and ways to encourage thoughtful change. The Middle School students are eager to continue the conversations at CA and are considering forming a STAMP Club.

September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage month and will be recognized in the Middle School in a variety of ways. Advisories will share videos and lead discussions about Hispanic Heritage Month and the richness and contributions of this community to Denver and our country. Similarly, our Table Talk, a chance for kids to come together to discuss what is on their minds, will focus on this topic. Then for a bit of fun, on October 12, during study hall, our own Elisa Waugh will be offering a samba lesson for anyone who would like to attend. (I’ll certainly be there!) This is in addition to our ongoing efforts to encourage cultural competency through the study of different cultures and communities and the development of interpersonal and collaborative skills that happen every day in our curriculum.

We are very lucky to be in a school that celebrates diversity, values inclusivity, strives for greater equity, and helps students prepare to be successful leaders and participants in an increasingly connected and multicultural world.
