"Just Ask" reflections, Formative Five "I" statements

By Angie Crabtree
Dear Lower School Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Homecoming celebration last weekend at CA! It was fun to see the Bike Parade and so many happy families on the CA campus. A HUGE thanks to Whitney Ladd for leading the organization of an amazing event and the organization of volunteers for our Lower School Homecoming activities!

Just Ask
I was so excited to receive the Just Ask homework from the students this week. It was so inspiring to see their reflections about questions they would ask to someone in the book. So many of them shared that the world would truly be boring if we were all the same. The sharing of unique super powers was so interesting too. Some included:
  • I try new things and don’t get upset if it doesn’t work out.
  • When people are sad, I can sense it and help them cheer up.
  • I am an equality maker.
  • Drawing is my super power and it is how I express myself best.
  • Loving other people with my whole heart!
Within the classroom, the teachers used the following questions to elicit discussion and conversation with the students:
  • Are you really good at something?
  • How do you use your senses?
  • What do you like to talk about?
  • How do you feel about being asked questions about yourself?
  • What are some things that help you learn?
  • How are you different from the kids in the book?
  • How are you different from other kids you know?
  • How do you celebrate your differences?
  • How can you learn more about other people?
  • How does understanding the different ways people do things help us appreciate their uniqueness?
  • Are there topics we should or should not ask about? Why or why not?
We will continue our discussions about Just Ask as we continue in Trimester One. In Trimester Two, we will introduce a new book to continue our conversations at school and home.

Formative Five
I am linking to a chart that we are using in the Lower School this year to support the Formative Five “I” statements. Your child sees them at school, and we would like each family to review and discuss them at home too. The faculty, staff, and I recommend hanging this in your home and using it as a connection to school, as we work to support each child’s social-emotional development.

Happy weekend to all!
Angie
