Celebrating the first week of school

By Angie Crabtree
Dear Lower School Families,

It was so great to be together this week! There was a ton of laughter and joy throughout the Lower School, as students connected with classroom and specialist teachers. If you have not sent your family photo (no larger than a 5 x 7), please send it on Monday, August 30, to include in our Hall of Families.

We enjoyed a lovely playground dedication ceremony, and there was lots of climbing and exploring around the new outdoor play areas this week. We also saw an increase in high energy and activity outside, as well as visits to the Health Office. I held a Lower School Town Meeting this week to review our recess rules, protocols, and safety guidelines with the students so that everyone plays in a safe way for themselves and others.

Please remember to send your child with a labeled water bottle each day. These are used for recess, Physical Education, and lunch. We have bottle fillers available in the Lower School for refills during the day.

The classroom teachers are looking forward to the CA Connects Parent/Teacher Conference Day on Wednesday, September 1. If you signed up to attend the conference via Zoom, the link will be located on the teacher’s class page. You may access the class page by:
  • Logging in to the website.
  • Select your child’s name at the top. If you have multiple children at CA, select Children and then the child’s name.
  • Scroll down to the class page. Select the class/teacher name.
  • The class page will open and the Zoom Link will be posted on this page.

The CA Connects Parent/Teacher Conference is designed differently than the traditional conference of the teacher providing you with information about your child’s performance in school. The goal of this conference is two-fold: to allow parents the opportunity to meet with their child’s classroom teacher and for parents to share insight and perceptions about their child. The format of this conference is best described as an 80/20 conversation; the parent shares 80 percent of the time while the teacher listens, and the teacher may share initial impressions and ask questions 20 percent of the time. You, as the parent, are the leader of this conference conversation.

You know your child best; your insight and experience are extremely valuable, as the teacher works to create a positive learning environment for each child. Providing this type of information early in the school year will allow the teacher to “get to know” each child and eliminate questions that may arise early in the year.
