Level UP and final Parent Association meeting

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
Last Friday, the Middle School invited Vishavjit Singh—an engineer, writer, educator, activist, costume player, and the artist behind Sikhtoons.com—to be our Level UP speaker for 2021. Level UP is an annual MS event organized by Sarah Wright and the MS Inclusivity Team. The event encourages our students to learn about other cultures, ideas, and religions, broadening our collective horizon and understanding. The day is also intended to engage our community in thinking about how we can be as welcoming and empathetic a school as we hope to be.

In his presentation, Mr. Singh told our students about those times that he was excluded when he was growing up—even told by strangers to “go back home.” He shared how he overcame those negative stereotypes and learned to embrace his culture and religion as a Sikh AND be a proud citizen of the United States. In his most famous role, Mr. Singh dons the red and blue uniform and well-recognized shield to become the Sikh “Captain America.”  When dressed as Captain America, he uses his “super power,” his ability to fight hate and dispel myths about Sikhs.

Final Parent Association Meeting: Next Thursday, May 6, at 9:45 a.m. is our final MS Parent Association meeting of this school year. At the meeting, I will share a few thoughts about this year and an overview of next fall and what to expect. The second half of the meeting will be an introduction to the Middle School for our rising Fifth Grade parents and parents new to the school. Jared Katzman, our Director of Technology, Katy Hills, our Arts Director, Elizabeth Drazdowski, our MS Athletic Director, and Kate Mackenzie, our MS Counselor, will join me to share their insights as well. Should be good fun. Here is the link:

Helping kids bring together the skill development and learning of the last eight months is important work.
