Highlights from the week

Jon Vogels
What a great last week it has been at Colorado Academy! I thought I would include a few quick mentions of some of the highlights. For more information on any of the events noted below, please see our social media feed, which features daily updates on the wonderful things going on all over campus.

Last Friday and Saturday, the Theater Department delighted two audiences with a concert version of Urinetown: the Musical. Performed on the steps on the east side of the Schotters Music Center, the cast and crew braved weather and many other unpredictable forces and delivered a winning performance. Congratulations to all involved! . . . On Monday, the Visual Arts faculty presented an ambitious and adventurous Arts Fest outside in the Stamper Commons. With ten different stations set up, the program allowed students of all ages to create art on the spot, or, in the words of the Art Fest's theme, students could "Make & Believe." What great fun it was to make finger puppets, buttons, a giant mural, large coil pots, cyanotype photos, spin art, or to make prints with the help of a steamroller driven by Ms. Hills. On this day the fickle April weather finally delivered a glorious day in the 70s. Seniors also got to spend time with their Kindergarten Buddies. . . On that same day in the afternoon, our Freshman class got outside for a little fun and games and class bonding. Whether playing kickball, giant Jenga, dodgeball, or simply hanging out, it was a time for the class to come together socially. Freshman Dean Ms. Hill organized the event and featured a few other structured activities with the purpose of helping the Class of 2024 have some "play time" together.

In the sports department, our climbing team turned in an outstanding performance over the weekend. Sophomore Cooper Carson led a group of eight boys to a First-Place finish and State qualifying. Our girls team finished third in the competition, with four climbers advancing to the State meet. . . . After being the #1 rated team for most of the season, the CA Field Hockey made it to the semi-finals this year but lost to a very tough Regis Jesuit team on Monday night. Two nights later, the Boys Soccer Team won its semi-final match-up against Kipp Collegiate and will now battle on Saturday night for the 3A State Championship. The game will be played in Colorado Springs. Meanwhile, the Ultimate team keeps playing and winning and will be in their playoff tournament this coming weekend. . . . And Season D sports started practicing this week. That means Baseball, Lacrosse (Boys and Girls), Girls Soccer, Girls Golf, and Girls Tennis are all underway, as is Track & Field, in which we participate with our neighbors at Denver Christian. Season D consists of all the sports that normally compete during the third trimester of a school year. With everything pushed forward, these sports' seasons will run from now until mid-June.

On the academic front, students are entering the home stretch of the school year. Students are busy working on assignments, including quite a few long-term research projects in various subject areas. Advanced Placement tests will begin as early as next week, depending on the subject. See my blog post from April 8 for more information.
