Town Meetings show breadth of Middle School community

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
We had a terrific Town Meeting this week. At 10:40 on Wednesday, we came together to learn, celebrate our community, and support one another. Our agenda was action packed. We had: a “health minute” led by Mrs. Estacio; an invitation from our Eighth Grade Leadership Team to our Seventh Grade students to apply for next year; a presentation from the MS Philanthropy Board; the math Problem of the Week; a presentation from Margie Timmers about Earth Day; a Writing Spotlight, featuring an excerpt from a novel that one of our students is writing; an invitation to come to a GSA meeting; a library independent reading challenge update; an invitation to join Table Talk on Friday; and a thank-you note from the recipients of our sock drive. And all of this in about 35 minutes!

Unquestionably, CA’s Middle Schoolers are active and involved. I want to put a spotlight on the Philanthropy Board in this blog. This is a group of MS students who work with their faculty sponsor, Sue Counterman, to learn about the good that philanthropy can do in the world. Through the process, students research worthy local, national, and international charities. These charities are then presented by the Philanthropy Board members to our community at a town meeting, and our students vote to determine which charities will receive donations this year. Each presenter did a terrific job, making choosing quite difficult. In the end, three charities were chosen:
  • Colorado Healing Fund
  • 350 Colorado
  • Colorado Chapter of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Also, just a reminder that Friday, April 30 is my final Open Door Morning before the end of the year.  While you can always reach out to me with a call or email, I try to set aside mornings that are designed to make it easy for parents to set up 20-minute appointments to chat about their child, the school, our curriculum or simply to get to know one-another a bit better.  If you would like to set up a time, please send Helen Romero, the MS administrative assistant, an email at helen.romero@coloradoacademy.org.

Please enjoy the weekend, and reach out to me if I can be helpful in any way.

Thanks,
Bill
