Busy weeks of competitions and performances

Jon Vogels
It’s been an eventful two weeks here at Colorado Academy. Despite the ongoing impact of the pandemic, we have had a number of culminating events and activities, especially in the arts and athletics.

  1. Mock Trial concluded its season with two teams competing in the state tournament from March 11-13. As always, our students performed admirably, and three students took home special honors: Junior Claire Kenney for outstanding performance as an attorney (including being recognized as having the best closing argument), and Juniors Audrey Gordon and Grace Trembath were both recognized for their witness performances. While neither team advanced to the final round (that was St. Mary’s vs. Regis), all of the students can be proud of their hard work and dedication to this demanding activity.
  2. Our Swimming and Diving state competitors traveled to Colorado Springs this week. The three competitors were Sophomore Kate McKean, Junior Lucy Rakowski and Senior Mackenzie Wagner, who placed 15th in the Diving competition. Our Varsity Basketball Team advanced all the way to the Elite 8 in this year’s playoffs, after defeating Centauri HS, way out in La Jara (such is the way with 3A sports). On Tuesday night, after another long trip, they lost to Manitou Springs, but all in all, it was a very successful year for them.
  3. In our inaugural year of Speech & Debate, we have two students advancing to the state tournament. Juniors Clare Milligan, who has a record of 24-6 in Lincoln-Douglas Debate this year, and Morgan Taylor, who is one of our many strong students in Original Oratory, will be competing there. Speech & Debate is governed by CHSAA in Colorado, but for now, there are no designations by school size, so these students will be going up against students from high schools large and small all over Colorado.
  4. Last month our State-best Ethics Bowl team matched up against a strong group from Utah to determine who was the best in the Western Region. Although the Utah team narrowly prevailed, our four competitors (Senior Lewie Sharp, Junior Morgan Taylor, Sophomore J.T. Timmers, and Senior Czarina Yuffa) received high praise from the judges.

And looking ahead:

  1. “Fall” sports have begun, as students play in the renamed “Season C” of this year. Our Boys Soccer Team earned a preseason #1 ranking and play their first game on Thursday. Field Hockey also earned a preseason #1 ranking and opened on Wednesday against Arapahoe High School. The Volleyball teams have their first games on Saturday of this week, as well. Great to see athletics going once again; warmer weather and improved COVID-19 numbers will allow us to have more spectators to watch these sports.
  2. This year’s Upper School Musical has been cast. We will present the contemporary classic Urinetown, a show as unusual and satirical as its title suggests. Performances will take place in an outdoor venue on April 23 and 24. In this pandemic year, the show will be done as an “in concert” experience, meaning all performers will carry a script and sing all songs/act all scenes standing in front of a microphone.
