Keeping student learning moving forward

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
I imagine our decision to have a Zoom school day yesterday was not as welcome for our students as a SNOW DAY would have been. I totally get it! Please let your child know that there will be real, go out and play, snow days in the future, but this time around, we thought it wise to keep the learning rolling. We have intentionally created a calendar that has “health breaks” built into it. In February we had two long weekends, which I hope gave students and families the chance to be together, slow down the pace, and have some fun.

Thanks to all of the parents who joined us for our Fun in February “SPEED” Parent Association Meeting. We hope that it was nice to hear a few words from Mike Davis, Head of School, Katy Hills, Arts Director, Sarah Wright, Director of Inclusivity, Kate MacKenzie, MS Counselor, and Elizabeth Drazdowski, MS Athletics Director. Keeping our remarks to two minutes or less was quite a challenge, as given half a chance, we will bend your ear for half an hour, as there is always so much to share about what we are up to with the kids.

Next week is Parent/Student/Teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. Our intention is to have students take the lead in sharing their learning experience—both what is going well and what is most challenging. Students have put time into preparing for these meetings, and we hope it helps them increasingly recognize that it is THEIR education, and that each can take greater control of their goals and outcomes. During the last five minutes of the conference, advisors will offer parents the opportunity to meet adult-to-adult, should that be helpful.

In anticipation of conferences, on Wednesday at 4 p.m., parents will receive an academic progress report. The report will contain a description of what is being studied, a cumulative grade, and category averages. Should a child achieve a C or below, there will also be individual remarks from the teacher. We hope that receiving this information just before conferences is helpful.

If you have any questions, or if I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Bill
