Reminders: Social distancing, Halloween, Open Door

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
All,

It has been another good week in the Middle School. The kids continue to bring their best selves to school and are actively engaging in each of their classes. I have had the chance to check in with almost all of the Middle School teachers and a common refrain has been, “what great kids we have.”

Social Distancing:

We are continuing to remind students how important it is to maintain social distance. We often ask kids to hold up their arms to be sure that they are standing further than two arm lengths apart. We recognize that this is not easy for kids (or adults). That said, while we have not issued very many infractions for repeated failure to social distance, we have given out a few. Should a child receive three infractions, we will be in touch with the child’s parents, as the student will not be allowed to come to school for one day, and they will be asked to write a note to me outlining their plan for doing a better job of social distancing when they are allowed to return.

We obviously want kids to be on campus as many days as possible, AND we want to ensure that kids are helping each other be safe by respecting our school rules about masks and distancing. My hope is that we will not cross the threshold of three “safety” infractions, but I also want to be clear about our expectations and the consequences, so that we are all on the same page.

In more fun news, Halloween is around the corner, and we invite students to wear a costume on the Rocky or Mustang costume day. We have shared the following reminders with the kids. My hope is that it will be a bit of “normalcy” in our year and allow us to have some fun together. I always look forward to some of the faculty costumes, as well.

Halloween reminders for kids:

Rockies Halloween = October 29 – this is the day Rockies may wear costumes to school
Mustang Halloween = October 30 – this is the day Mustangs may wear costumes to school

Expectations:
  • Kids and teachers can come in costume on the designated day; it is optional.
  • Costumes must be appropriate for school and allow children to do work – we will have an academic day; appropriate for school includes being thoughtful about choosing a costume that does not make others feel uncomfortable or does not make light of some else’s community, background, or culture.
  • Masks MUST be worn with costumes!
  • Children need to arrive at school in costume - all make-up and hairspray must be put on before arrival and may not be brought to school.
  • Costumes are not allowed in school on any day but the designated Rocky or Mustang Halloween.
  • No weapons, please.

Open Door Morning:

My next Open Door Morning is Thursday, November 5. Should you like to set up a 20-minute Zoom meeting with me, please contact Helen Romero, the MS administrative assistant, by email – helen.romero@coloradoacademy.org. These “chats” are intended to make it easy for parents to be in touch about whatever happens to be on your mind. We could chat about your child or simply get to know one another a bit better. Should there be a pressing issue, please do not wait until then; simply pick up the phone and give me a ring.

I hope you enjoy the October Holiday on Monday, October 19. The kids are working hard, and I imagine the break will be welcome. If I can be helpful in any way, please be in touch.

Best,
Bill
