SEE YOU AT SCHOOL: DETAILS FOR RETURNING TO ON-CAMPUS LEARNING

Week two is almost in the history books. We are pleased with our students' level of engagement. Students are getting into the routine of learning in class and managing homework, a virtuous cycle. On Wednesday, Dr. Mike Davis spoke to the Middle School at a Town Meeting. He described how important it is to respect one another’s differences, actively engage in creating a just world, and develop the skills to be successful in a multi-cultural world.

On Thursday, we had our first All-Virtual Back-to-School Night. For the most part it went well, although I was slow out of the gate, as I experienced a bit of “technical difficulties” with my slides.  I have attached them here. The rock climbing picture is a bit embarrassing, but I had a great time with my “guide,” Story, who also doubles as my daughter. The Richmond Golf Rules are worth the read, as it reminds us of what “common, everyday courage” looks like during extraordinary circumstances like the Blitz of Britain in 1940. I appreciate the efforts that everyone made to attend this important evening and hope that you gained insight into why, we believe, your kids are in good hands.

Next week we are returning to campus. Hurray! On Monday, August 31, the Mustangs group will come to campus and have the chance to learn about how school will work. Then on Tuesday, September 1, the Rockies group will get the same opportunity. During August 31 and September 1, we will NOT be zooming the classes, so when you are NOT on campus, either because your group is not on campus OR if you are learning remotely this year, you have a REST day. Then on Wednesday, September 2, we will be running our “regular” CA Flex schedule. View Smart Restart calendar. One group will be attending class in person with the other Zooming in. Homework may be assigned Monday and Tuesday, so students have been asked to check their assignments for Wednesday. View Middle School Flex groups (you must be signed into the CA website to view.)

I am looking forward to our training days, because it will give us the chance to help the students practice our new safety guidelines and what social distancing will look like at school. At school, we will have a Town Meeting, and I will share with the kids a good deal of information about how we will bring our community together on campus, have fun, support each other, and learn.

Here are a few reminders:

Beach Towel and Water Bottle
Each student should bring a beach towel to school next week. The beach towel will be used for lunch and outdoor activities. We are planning to enjoy picnic lunches outside. We will send the beach towel home periodically to be washed and returned to school. Each student should also bring a labeled water bottle to school each day. This will be used in the classroom, as well as for lunch. The water bottle will go home each day to be washed. Students will be able to fill their water bottles throughout the school day.

Other things to bring every day:
-       2 masks
-       Snack
-       Bookbag with necessary school items (pens, etc.)
-       A charged iPad

Reminder about Sports Clothing and Gear:
As indicated by the Athletic Department, students will practice in what each wears to school, as we do not have lockers or changing rooms. They can change into cleats, shin guards, and the like. (Students are not limited to grey and black.) Sports gear should be clearly marked with a child’s name and dropped at the gym before school starts.

School Arrival:
Students should arrive no earlier than 7:50 a.m. to school this year, and class begins at 8:10 am. Upon arrival, students may either chat (socially distanced) on Wright Field or go to their advisory/class meeting. On Monday and Tuesday, the school day starts with an advisory meeting.

Once students arrive at school, we will take it from there, helping each get off to a good start for ON CAMPUS learning. Can’t wait!
