Reflecting on a year of rich learning

By Bill Wolf-Tinsman
With two weeks left in school, the hands of time appear to move more and more rapidly, as we strive to help students create meaning from the various lessons and experiences they have had this school year. In various ways, teachers are helping students make sense out of the academic, social, and athletic learning each has experienced. While rich learning never gets tied neatly in a bow—it’s simply too complex and messy—the process of thinking through what was important, what to carry forward, and how one has grown is an important habit for young (and old) people to develop.

This week we enjoyed a Town Meeting and had the treat of watching Middle School students perform in the Talent Show. At the Town Meeting, we celebrated student writing and recognized how much pleasure reading was accomplished throughout the year. The Philanthropy Board also gave a thoughtful presentation, and Sarah Wright, our Director of Inclusivity, invited students to think about the power of inclusion and discussed strategies for interrupting prejudice and unkindness that kids could practice.

We finished our day seeing the many and varied talents of our students during our annual Talent Show. There isn’t anything quite like the Talent Show in the Middle School. I so respect the willingness of students to jump in and share with each other what they enjoy doing. Equally important, the Middle Schoolers are a fabulously supportive audience for each other. I invariably leave the show feeling great about how empathetic, supportive, AND talented our students are.

I hope that everyone enjoys the extra day this weekend. Per usual, if I can be helpful in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Bill
