Sharing Your Lessons Learned

Angie Crabtree
Dear Lower School families,

We enjoyed lots of snow and celebrating Halloween as a Lower School community this week. Thank you for your role in supporting the classroom Halloween celebrations. It was a spooky, fun-filled time!

I am currently re-reading one of my favorite books, Lessons Learned, by Roland S. Barth. Mr. Barth is an educator who studies the impact of interpersonal relationships in the workplace and how those relationships shape the culture and ambiance within a school. Within this book, he includes a plethora of quotes to emphasize his points throughout the book. As I was reading this week, I thought that I would share a few of them with you…they made me stop and think about how, as adults, we can model the message for children within these simple quotes.

Laugh with others often, audibly, and visibly.

Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.

If you want to have your say, you’ve got to be present for the conversation.

Our strengths may become our weaknesses.

Acknowledge and applaud not only accomplishment but also effort.

Keep your balance – or fall.

To perform like a team, act like a team – together.

Finding your place – or places – may take a lifetime.

Often at the end of the school day, I reflect on students that I visit with, speak with, laugh with, or play in the snow with…and my hope is that I modeled interpersonal skills that made an impact on each of them. Our actions send such big messages to young children. If you have “words that you live by,” I encourage you to share those with your child and explain what they mean to you. Teachable moments like this are necessary and can make a difference!

Reminder for next week: Friday, November 8 is a Professional Day – no school for students. Child care is not available.

Thank you,
Angie Crabtree
