Carl Kumpe '90
Carl Kumpe will be inducted into the Oberlin Athletic Hall of Fame on October 4, 2019. As mentioned on the Oberlin website, Carl was a four-year letter winner in soccer and lacrosse and a dual-sport star during his Yeomen career.
Capping off his illustrious career in the spring of 1994 as a senior on the lacrosse team, Carl became the first player in program history to earn North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) First-Team honors after scoring 40 goals and dishing out 11 assists. His strong play offensively, defensively, and from the face-off X helped the Yeomen finish third in the NCAC with a record of 9-4 overall and 4-4 in league play. For his efforts, he was nominated to compete in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s North vs. South All-Star Game.
An elite midfielder, Carl’s 40 tallies were the most of any Yeoman to ever play the position before him. He was the top scoring middie in the NCAC in 1994 and ranked among the top 10 goal scorers nationally at the position.
On the soccer field, Carl displayed his athletic ability as a goalkeeper. Throughout his four-year career he posted 1.7 goals against average which still ranks sixth all-time in Oberlin history. Currently seventh all-time with five-career shutouts, Carl denied 159 shots in 24 career matches between the pipes.
After earning his undergraduate degree in biology in 1994, he went on to earn a juris doctorate degree from the University of Denver College of Law. He is currently working as a senior patent counsel at Evonik Corporation in Parsippany, NJ.
Carl still remains active as a trainer, coach, and competitor with certifications from CrossFit, USA Weightlifting, and World Kettlebell Club. He has two children, Sawyer and Cezanne.
