Words of Welcome and Learning to Speak Up

Angie Crabtree
Dear Families,

Happy Sock Day in the Lower School! The hallways will be full of snazzy and colorful socks today! Thank you for attending the Lower School Back-to-School Night! The faculty, staff, and I enjoyed having you with us for the evening.

We gathered together as a Lower School community this week for our September Town Meeting. We are celebrating the book Say Something by Peter H. Reynolds throughout each Town Meeting. In the book, the author encourages children to speak up and speak out, and he shares that each person can say something with words, with actions, and with heart. We watched a story of a woman who took on the challenge to make people smile wherever she went. It was a joyful story that prompted all of us to smile all day. Sarah Wright, Director of Inclusivity, visited us as well and challenged each of us to think about the kind of leader we want to be in the world. She encouraged us to find our voice in the way that works for each of us and share it with others.

Mrs. Bartel and Mrs. Golden also composed a song for us to complement our Say Something focus for the year. We sang it together as a Lower School at the Town Meeting. The words are:

Your words can be of welcome,*
To make friends along the way.
Your voice can change the world my friend,
Be brave in what you say.

On Monday, the Lower School will conduct a Lockdown Drill. This drill is designed to place the students in a safe location if an intruder were on the campus. Before the drill on Monday, the classroom teachers will discuss that we practice many drills throughout the year to keep us safe. Our goal is for the drill to be a learning opportunity and not a frightening situation for the students. We completed a fire drill two weeks ago, and the Lower School faculty and students did an excellent job. I want to encourage you to speak with your child about the importance of drills in school and within your home.

Two resources that you may want to preview and discuss with your child in preparation for our Lockdown Drill on Monday, September 16.

Thank you,
Angie Crabtree
