Getting Ready to Welcome New Students

Mike Davis
Next week at Colorado Academy, we will host one of my favorite events of the year—a dinner to welcome new parents. The room is always filled with such anticipation and excitement as the new year at a new school is about to begin. This evening sets the tone for so many other interactions throughout the year, and we are delighted that we have an amazing group of new students joining our school community.

Throughout our admission process, we look for students who can join our school environment, become fully engaged in the many opportunities afforded students here, and contribute to our collective efforts to learn and grow together.

Students joining CA have completed a highly competitive process  -- one of the most competitive ever this past admission season. We are welcoming a remarkable group of new students to our community who are highly qualified academically, who exhibit character, and who already possess a wide range of strong interests and passions.  We are excited to welcome:

  • A Pre-K student who wants to be an astronaut so he can “eat the dried food.”
  • A Kindergartner who says she learned to count backwards by watching the screen on her microwave.
  • A first grader who gives her dessert away to classmates who don’t have any.
  • A budding third grade botanist who is currently growing mushrooms, cacti, air plants and bamboo.
  • A sixth grader whose favorite pastime is tying fishing flies with his grandpa.
  • A sixth grader who is the only girl in the advanced math class at her school.
  • A sixth grader who has published an online story about a tomato that is a sorcerer.
  • A sixth grader who reads and writes Arabic and is passionate about Sudanese dancing.
  • A sixth grader who represents her school in the citywide spelling bee.
  • An eighth grader who won the “Kindness Award” at her school.
  • Several rising ninth grade robotics enthusiasts who all got their start building with Legos.
  • A ninth grade girl who raises money from companies to help build wells in Zambia for drinking water.
  • A ninth grade girl who won first place in the Denver Metro Science and Engineering Fair.
  • A ninth grade boy who loves screenwriting and has studied in Switzerland.
  • A ninth grade boy who is an accomplished Opera performer and is taking flying lessons.
  • A ninth grade girl who started watching foreign films at age five and writes a movie blog.
  • A ninth grade boy who has been the two-time gold medal winner on the National Mythology Exam.
  • A ninth grader who writes a column for the Five Points News and is on the Board of the Young Americans Bank.
  • A tenth grader who has been known to rise at 4:00 a.m. to photograph dawn at the Botanic Gardens.
  • A ninth grade girl who has taken acting lessons with the DCPA and also rows with the Mile High Rowing Team.

I hope you will welcome our new families and students to our community and be present at our many events through the coming year to witness our amazing students live out our mission. Welcome!
