College Counseling

Challenging Every CA Student to Forge a Meaningful, Independent Path
The Colorado Academy College Counseling team provides close, individual guidance and extensive resources to CA students as they explore options beyond their high school years. Our program includes two full-time Directors of College Counseling and a full-time Associate Director, all professionals and specialists in college admission, who are solely dedicated to guiding students through the process. We travel extensively to visit colleges and universities and are active in leading national professional organizations and in participating in the national dialogue around college admission practices, trends and philosophy.

Our Empowering, Student-Led Process

In keeping with our school’s mission, we challenge students to consider the wide range of possibilities available to them and to apply the tools of inquiry to this exploration. We ask them to look to the self-knowledge they’ve gained at CA to seek a set of potential choices that represent a meaningful path to their future goals and aspirations. We also accompany the students through this process, from initial self-assessment and creating and researching college lists to the final decision of where they will spend their next four years. Students can only find real success if they are empowered and allowed to take the lead, while parents, teachers, and counselors partner to support and advise them.

The Upper School Journey

Our counseling program engages students as early as freshman year to raise awareness of the record they are building and of the journey ahead. The highly collaborative college counseling team meets with ninth and tenth grade students during the year to advise them on their choices in their curriculum and activities, and we offer initial standardized testing opportunities in the tenth grade to familiarize students with that process. With a wide range of programming offered for students and parents, our office is a complete “one-stop shop” for preparing for and applying to colleges. Everything we do is informed by the CA mission and is based on knowledge of the CA curriculum and community.

We believe that the middle of the junior year is the best time to begin serious occupation with the college process. At that point, students have the perspective needed to begin to make choices and distinctions that will shape their application list – always with an eye to an honest self-assessment and thoughtful, research-based understanding of potential college “matches.” The journey begins in earnest with the January College Night for Juniors. The counselors meet individually with juniors from that point onward, continuing a dialogue with the student and the family until the end of senior year. We frame the entire process as a set of opportunities for growth and discovery.

CA and its programs are well-known in college admissions offices nationally, and our students are recognized as valuable contributors to classrooms and communities – well equipped to hit the ground running and to make a difference in the colleges they attend. Our office annually hosts more than 140 college admission representatives that visit in the fall to meet with our juniors and seniors.

Our students report a high rate of satisfaction with the process and with their college decisions, and our school culture celebrates the diversity of those individual choices. We also excited by their adventurous spirit; CA alumni currently attend 120 institutions of higher education in 40 states, DC, Canada, the UK, the UAE, and Singapore.

We look forward to joining you as you direct your CA journey toward an exciting new destination!
