Sizing Up Spring Athletics

Spring sports are well under way on South Pierce Street.  The Colorado Academy Department of Athletics is busy supporting coaches and athletes as they compete at some of the highest levels possible in their particular sports.  CA backs six spring interscholastic teams in which more than 175 upper school student-athletes participate. Many of these students play other sports at CA in different seasons. Each year, Upper School student-athletes play more than 170 home and away contests.  I hope you can get out to enjoy at least one game to cheer on these amazing students.

Boys Lacrosse Head Coach, Randy Colley, will lead his charges again this spring from the sidelines.  Seniors Beau Lawrence, Jack Cmil, and Matt Pollack will be looked upon to lead a young, yet experienced, squad on the field.  With fellow seniorsAndrew Maffei, Tyler McCoy, Matt Hahn, Jack Cahill, Dana Greenleaf, Parker Dawson, and Cam Pollock providing depth, the Mustangs will be a formidable foe come playoff time.

Our Girls Lacrosse team, coached by third-year program head Steph Sanders, will look to build on the team thatwon the last two Colorado State championships.  Two-time Colorado Player of the Year, senior goalie Bridget Sutter, and fellow seniors NellieTurnage and Jacqueline Patel lead the way for the Mustangs from the defensive end, while seniors Claire Wright, Alex Bestick, Sydney Prokupek, and Tate Woolley look to score the bulk of the goals on the offensive end.

Head of CA Baseball, JT Putt, has dedicated countless hours to building a league contender.  The payoff will be this spring and in the next few years.  Putt’s nine is led by seniors Evan Reiter, Ben Cole, Nathan Keplinger and Bryce Okazaki.  The season opened well, with a 8-0 victory over DSST-Stapleton.

Tennis will be extremely strong this spring after a top 3 finish last year.  Seniors Grace Ingebretsen, Amelia Lochhead, and Hope Cherubini will be counted on to provide leadership and depth.  With the formation of 3A tennis this year, look for the Mustangs, coached by Bob Ulrich, to challenge for the top spot in the state.
CA Soccer is strong again this year with the likes of seniors Celia Osman and IsabelChandler leading the way.  Head of CA soccer Sean Stedeford will boast a balance of youth and veterans as the squad makes another deep push into the league and state playoffs.  The season started well with shutout victories over Discovery Canyon and DSST-Stapleton.

Beth Folsom, Head of CA Golf, anticipates this spring to be a banner year for the squad. Leading the way for the girls will be sophomore individual State Runner-Up from last year’s state championship team, Caroline Jordaan.  Joining Jordaan on the Varsity will be seniorsTrinity Goderstad, Maddie Berg, Sarah Street and Cassie Kneen.  The state championship tournament will be at the Broadlands; expect the CA girls to be relevant on the last day.
