Basketball Season Ends With Team Gains

The winter basketball season concluded this past month with both the boys and girls teams competing valiantly in their league tournaments and then in the Colorado State tournament.  The boys had a fantastic run in the Metro League Tournament that should provide some spark heading into their off-season.  After winning their first league play-in game and then losing their second game, the boys then went on a two-game winning streak that saw them avenge two regular season losses vs. Bishop Machebeuf and Jefferson Academy.  The boys ended up Fifth in the Metro League, a league that has proven to be one of the tougher leagues in the state.

The boys were then seeded 27th in the state and faced an extremely athletic and fast DSST-Stapleton team in the first round of the state tournament.  The boys fought well and had chances, but fell to the host Knights, who won their region and eventually went on to the Elite 8.  SophomoreHunter Shkapich was named First Team, All-Metro League for his efforts, and seniorTye Thompson was recognized as an Honorable Mention, All-Metro League performer.  Seniors Pepijn Van Ede and James Jensen should also be mentioned for their four years of hard work, positive attitude, and outstanding leadership.

The girls basketball program also had a fantastic season that saw the varsity team rack up 17 victories, the most in the program’s recent history.  The girls also finished Second in the Metro League, nearly pulling out the league championship in their final game against Faith Christian.  Seeded 20th in the state, the girls played Eaton in the first round of the state tournament, but unfortunatelydropped that contest to finish out their season 17-6.  The girls had a nice mix of veteran leaders and younger players who will return next year.  The JV team also had a sense of accomplishment, with many girls receiving invaluable playing experience and top-notch instruction.  Good things are on the horizon for Coach G’s program.  Recognized for their talents, senior Claire Wright was named First Team, All-Metro League, while sophomore Maggie Silliman was named Honorable Mention, All-Metro League.  Seniors Celia Osman, Harper Ellsworth, and Kelsey Stone are to be commended for their strong leadership, terrific work ethic, and ability to be remain consistently positive throughout the basketball season.
