Breaking Bread

Every year, Colorado Academy’s Parent Association hosts our annual “Taste of CA” event. A word of thanks to our parents who have worked year after year to make this an amazing celebration. For many families and especially students, this event is an annual favorite. This week’s event was no different.

Event-goers heard a sampling of languages from CA students and students visiting from Argentina. They took part in a Step Lesson from faculty member Adrian Green and his Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers. They enjoyed dances of the Filipino-American Community of Colorado Cultural Group and Lion Dance and Kung Fu Demonstration by Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu.

Even more importantly, families shared cuisine from cultures and traditions and from around the world. We all know the value of breaking bread together and of sharing a meal. Parenting experts for years have encouraged families to protect and nurture those mealtime traditions and emphasize their importance for supporting family communications, allowing children to talk about experiences, and helping them learn from others.

It turns out there is scientific data that shows the benefits of a shared meal. The day after Taste of CA, one of this year’s SPEAK lecturers, NPR’s Shankar Vedantam reported on a study that shows how sharing food has all kinds of benefits.

Enjoy!
