Outbreak: Plagues That Changed History

Join us for this compelling and helpful virtual lecture designed to help families and students remain resilient, optimistic, informed, and inspired during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lecture will take place on Zoom.
Join author and illustrator Bryn Barnard, now living in Singapore, for a fascinating look at how pandemics can change society for the better. Barnard says, “I doubt next time around we’ll be caught without mask or ventilator stockpiles. We may develop broad-spectrum corona vaccines. We’ll probably be less of a just-in-time globally integrated economy. And of course, it may even change Asia’s love for live animal markets.” Barnard will show you how epidemics can force enormous change on societies. Disease can determine not only who lives and who dies, but who wins and who loses, who gets wealthy and who stays poor, which ideas become popular and which ones wither away. Plagues are the true invisible hand, guiding our destiny. Outbreak was listed as one of the best books of 2006 by the New York Public Library. The original paintings for Outbreak were exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Global Health Odyssey Museum at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C., and the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, in Port Angeles, Wash. This talk is suitable for adults and Middle and Upper School students.
