Helping children to be resilient and deal effectively with challenges and adversity is a significant task of parenting. The importance of resilience has assumed even greater importance since COVID-19, the murder of George Floyd, and the divisiveness that has intensified throughout our country. In his presentation, Dr. Brooks will highlight the lifelong impact that parents, teachers, and other caregivers can have on a child’s sense of hope and resilience. He will describe realistic strategies for nurturing key components of resilience in children, components that include intrinsic motivation, problem-solving skills, self-discipline, enriching the lives of others, managing setbacks and obstacles, and identifying and using one’s strengths or “islands of competence.”This SPEAK event will take place on Zoom.
