Timeline of ASR Implementation

A Multi-Year Initiative

Advanced Studies and Research is the result of a nearly decade-long process led by faculty and administrative leaders and informed by the school’s mission and long-term strategic planning.

2016

Strategic Plan

As CA develops its 2016 Strategic Plan, key indicators are highlighted, setting the school on the path to its current ASR initiatives.

2019-2020

Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS) Re-Accreditation process begins at Colorado Academy.

2020-2021

AP Committee

Faculty and administrative leadership group researches, speaks to three dozen peer independent schools, interviews college deans, and debates rationale for AP program.

2021-2022

2022 Strategic Plan

A committee of faculty, Pre-K-12 administration, students, and trustees collaborate to develop a vision for CA’s future.

Fall 2021: English and Social Studies faculty advance conversations about curriculum skills and objectives.

May 2022: CA announces innovation in English and Social Studies, timeline for retiring four AP classes in these departments.

2022-2023

Advanced Studies and Research (ASR) Program established at CA in fall of 2022.

Academic Affairs Committee (AAC)
CA creates a curriculum working group to guide academic innovation. With guidance from AAC and academic leadership, departments embark on a structured, multiyear evaluation process to examine the future of AP.

2023-2024

ASR Expands

CA launches 14 ASR courses to the 2023-2024 Upper School curriculum. The departments of Computer Science, English, Social Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts begin to offer ASR electives with weighted grades. There were 215 student enrollments in ASR courses.

Students display their depth of learning in the ASR Showcase. Additional ASR courses Developed in Science, Mathematics, and World Languages.

2024-2025

ASR, now established within the Upper School curriculum, continues to see increased student interest and enrollment.

Five new courses are added for 2024-2025: Literature: The Anxiety of Influence ASR; Literature: Prizewinners Now ASR; the multidisciplinary Cryptography in History and Mathematics ASR; Chinese Cultural Studies ASR; and 20th Century Hispanic Literature ASR.
