Thursday 9/25              Field Trip to South Park City Museum in Fairplay 8:30-2:30

Students ride on school buses and need to bring a sack lunch.  (No eating on the bus.)  Fairplay is at 9896 feet and the museum is outside, so students need to dress for cold weather.  Parents may join us for this field trip, either riding on the school buses or driving by car and meeting us there.  It takes 1½ to 2 hours to drive to Fairplay.  We leave school at 8:30 a.m. and return around 2:30 p.m.

Johnny Appleseed Day    

                                    Arts Around Presentation on Sculpture @ 2:15

                                    Apple Carving & Snacks @ 2:30

The boys & girls wear read or dress like Johnny Appleseed with overalls, a pot on their head, old jeans, etc.  We start with an Arts Around presentation.  Then the children carve apples.  The apples dry for a month and then we make apple head puppets.  Parents are welcome (and encouraged) to join us to help carve the apples.

 

Tuesday 9/30                C.A. Sculpture Tour & Writing  10:00-11:10 & 1:45-3:00

Mrs. Andrews leads the tour.  We walk around the CA campus to learn about the sculptures & write in journals.  Parents are encouraged to join us for this tour. 

 

Thursday 10/2              First Spelling-Dictation Test in 3-A.

 

Friday 10/3                   Colorado History Museum

All third graders will go to the museum for a class on Mining, a class about Cowboys, and a teacher-guided tour to prepare for Saturday Docents.  Sack lunches are provided by CA.  We do not need parents for this trip… sorry.  

 

October 6-10                Facts Test: addition & subtraction.  Students will be tested individually during Specials.

 

Tuesday 10/7                Colorado History Museum

All third graders will go to the museum for a class on Ancient Ones, a class about Fur Trade, and a teacher-guided tour to prepare for Saturday Docents.  Sack lunches are provided by CA.  We do not need parents for this trip… sorry.  

 

Friday 10/10                 Teddy Bear Day

Students in all three classes will bring their teddy bears for the day.  We’ll learn about President Theodore Roosevelt’s hunting trip in Colorado, the national forests that Roosevelt helped to establish, and how the teddy bear was named.

 

Tuesday 10/14              Guest Speaker (& C.A. parent) Dr. Michal Ruder   2:00-2:30

Dr. Ruder will talk about “Colorado Mining Today” with all three third grade classes. 

Parents may join our class.

                                    Science Field Trip to Colorado School of Mines & Morrison Museum of Natural History

Mrs. Koniz and the three third grade classes will tour the Geology Museum at the CSM, eat lunch, and then visit the Morrison Museum of Natural History.  Students need to dress for the weather since they will be outside for part of the field trip.  Lunch is provided by CA.  We do not need parents for this trip … sorry.

 

Monday 10/27              Lewis & Clark Day  

Students can be Naya Nuki, Sacajawea, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, York, Cameahwait, or Charbonneau.  We’ll have some expedition food, and we’ll work on our Naya Nuki Board books.

 

Tuesday 10/28              Mrs. Miller’s Storytelling “Pikes Peak Stories” @ 2:00.  Parents are welcome to join us.

 

Wednesday 10/29         3-A Mock Lecture Series @ 9:15.

Students write descriptions from Molly or JJ Brown’s point of view and present the descriptions orally in a lecture format.  Parents are invited to the lecture.

 

Thursday 10/30                        3-A Mock Lecture Series @ 12:15.

Students write paragraphs from Horace, Augusta or Baby Doe Tabor’s point of view and present the paragraphs orally in a lecture format.  Parents are invited to the lecture.

The children use the dried carved apples from Johnny Appleseed Day and magically turn them into puppets.  We need LOTS of parents to help the children make their puppets.

Thursday 11/13                        3-A Apple Head Puppet Shows in Sadler @ 12:15

This is an annual Mrs. Andrews event.  Parents, friends & family are encouraged to see the children’s puppet plays.  The boys & girls use the puppets they made with the dried Johnny Appleseed apple heads and perform their original plays.

Thursday 11/20                        Colorado Fashion Show in Welborn House @ 12:15

3-A students wear their Colorado costumes and tell about who they are: rancher, cowboy, Native American, miner, entrepreneur, etc.

 

Saturday 11/22             Museum Guides at the Colorado History Museum

                                    1300 Broadway  (by the Capitol, Library & Art Museum)

Students dress in Colorado Costumes and are guides at the museum.  They may come for an hour or more, any time between 10:00 and 2:30.  Since Mrs. Andrews will be at the museum all day, parents may stay at the museum or leave their children to guide.  We spend September and October learning about Colorado and preparing to be student guides.

Several years ago CA parent Joanne Sisun researched and prepared a collection of paintings inspired by Shakespeare’s writings.  She will share the collection with the class.  Parents are encouraged to join us for this fabulous presentation.

 

Tuesday 12/2                DIA Terminal & Captain Jepp @ 2:00

The authors of the biography of aviator Elrey B. Jeppesen will talk to all three classes about Capt. Jepp and why the terminal at DIA was named after him.  Parents are welcome to join the classes to hear about Capt. Jepp.

 

Wednesday 12/3           Guest Speaker C.A. ninth grader Sara Ozawa @ 9:15

Sara will talk about her grandparents’ experiences in Japanese-American internment camps.  Parents are welcome to join us for Sara’s presentation.

 

Friday 12/5                   Third Grade Scholastic Read for 2009

All third graders participate in this Read-In sponsored by Scholastic Books.  Students can wear pajamas and bring a pillow, blanket, stuffed animal and book.

 

Wednesday 12/10         Pre-K Gifts

Third graders will go to the Pre-K classroom with books wrapped for their Pre-K buddy.  We will give our buddies their gifts, and the Pre-Kers will treat the 3-A Buddies to holiday cookies.

 

Friday 12/12                 Fun Fiction Chocolate Party

Students read one, two or three chocolate-related books and celebrate with a Fun Fiction Chocolate Party during our book club.  Everyone needs to bring a bag of their favorite chocolate to share during our book club meeting.  (We save the extra chocolate for snacks in 2009.)

 

Monday 12/15              Arts Around Presentation @ 2:30 on Northwest Coast Indian Art

We will prepare for our NW Coast Indian Potlatch with this Arts Around presentation.

 

Wednesday 12/17         Last day to sign the ClassroomsCare poster in the hallway.

All three third grade classes participate in this service-learning reading project sponsored by Scholastic Books.  For every 100 books that a class reads, Scholastic donates 100 books to children in need.  The books are any books that the children have read during third grade.

 

Thursday 12/18                        Holiday Program @ 7pm

 

Friday 12/19                 3-A Holiday Party Northwest Coast Indian Potlatch beginning @ 1:00

Students exchange gifts with classmates & we eat Northwest Coast Indian food.  Parents are invited to join us at the Potlatch.  Students also perform Readers’ Theater for the Potlatch entertainment.

Monday 1/26                     Writing Poetry with Colorado Supreme Court Justice Greg Hobbs @ 10:00

Justice Hobbs not only sits on the bench, but he also writes poetry.  He will spend an hour talking with the class about poetry and writing.  Parents are welcome to come to the classroom to hear Justice Hobbs.

Thursday 1/29                   Marilyn Miller Storytelling about “Aunt Clara Brown.”  Parents are invited to join us.

 

Thursday 1/29                   3-A Robert Burns Day Celebration  8:20-9:30

The children dress in plaids, kilts & argyles and share poems they have written in a Burns style.  We also eat Scottish shortbread and have tea.  Parents are encouraged to join us for the poetry readings.

 

Friday 1/30                          McKissack Discussion with Mrs. Hiskey & Justina Ford, M.D. Book Share

Students read books by the McKissacks and discuss their conclusions with Mrs. HIskey.  They also read about Dr. Ford and create a Pre-K biography to share with each other and with their Pre-K Buddies.

Monday 2/2                       African-American Read-In @ 10 o’clock in Welborn House.

The three third grade classes share Drs. Sam & Barbara Batey’s African-American Heritage. (The Bateys are CA grandparents.)  Parents are welcome and encouraged to join the classes.

 

Monday 2/2                       Arts Around @ 2:30 – Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Architecture

This presentation enhances our class study of the Colorado High Plains, Laura

Ingalls Wilder’s prairie, and the way the land has influenced architecture.

Kellie Prall is coming to share quilt-making techniques as well as the history of quilts as part of our reading of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books.  Parents are invited to join us in this fun morning.  She plans to make a 3-A Quilt.

Students dress up like pioneers in Laura’s day.  After the demonstrations, we sing Happy Birthday to Laura and eat 1890s Pound Cake with Lemonade.  The students’ historical demonstrations start at 1:00 and last for about an hour.  Parents are encouraged to join us for all or part of the day.  Celebrating Laura’s birthday is another Mrs. Andrews tradition.

                                                Valentine’s Day Turn-of-the-Century (1900s) Party @ 2:30

All three third grade classes study Irma Bartels, a twelve year old girl who lived in Denver at the end of the 1890s.  Our Valentine Parties have turn-of-the-century games, sugar cookies, and fancy Valentine boxes.  The boys & girls dress in clothes as Irma and her friends would have worn for their Valentine Party – boys in overalls or knickers and girls in party dresses.  Girls can bring their dolls for a Victorian tea party.

February 17-27                  Irma Boxes in class.

Students find a small box or small chest (shoebox size) and choose 5 objects from their bedroom that typify Colorado life and culture in 2009.  Students will share their boxes during the two weeks.

 

Tuesday 2/17                Colorado’s Railroad History @ 2:00

Steve Lee, retired Jeffco teacher and storyteller, dresses as a fictional railroad brakeman  named Hiram Wheeler.  Mr. Lee teaches all three third grade classes about the importance of railroads to Colorado’s development as a state.  He also tells the students about railroad entrepreneur Otto Mears and explains how telegraph was used.   Parents are welcome to join us.

 

February 18-24              ERB Testing in Third Grade

 

Tuesday 2/24                Marilyn Miller Storytelling about “Heroes” @ 2:00.  Parents are invited to join us.

 

Thursday 2/26              9:55 Colorado Days at Town Meeting

All third graders present a mini-Colorado Days at the Lower School Town Meeting.  Students need to bring their Colorado costume to school for this musical presentation with Mrs. Rider. 

 

                                    10:30 Colorado Days Celebration for PARENTS: Choir Room of Schotters Music Building

This has become an annual event.  All three third grade classes join Mrs. Rider for this singing & folk dancing performance that celebrates our state.  Parents come and join the fun.  All third graders need to wear their Colorado Costumes for the performance. 

 

Monday 3/2                 Read Across America - Dr. Seuss Read-In

Third graders can wear silly hats, pajamas & slippers and also may bring a pillow, blanket & stuffed animals.  Students also need to bring one book by Dr. Seuss to share with the class.

 

March 5 & 6                 Parent Conferences  (Parents only attend third grade conferences.)

 

Thursday 3/12              Touring Colorado @ 12:15

Students read about national parks, national monuments, historic sites, and rivers in Colorado and then give brief presentations about their topics.  Parents are invited to tour with us.

 

Thursday 3/19              3-A Law Firm Day

The class divides into Legal Teams, and the teams use their peers’ IIM Reports to gather facts for mock cases.  Each team outlines the contents of their team’s reports and make presentations of the facts to the entire 3-A Law Firm. 

 

Friday 3/20                   Pre-K Teddy Bear Tea

The Lords need to wear a tie, and the Ladies need to wear a dress or skirt.

 

March 21-30                 Spring Break

 

Tuesday 3/31                Marilyn Miller Storytelling about Molly Brown @ 2:00.

Parents are invited to join us.  Mrs. Miller dresses as Margaret Tobin Brown and tells Molly’s story to all three third grade classes.

 

Friday 4/4                     3-A Poetry Workshop

The boys & girls spend the day learning about forms of poetry and writing their own poems.  This is the kick-off for the writing of their own poetry collections.

Monday 4/13                3-A Beverly Cleary Birthday Bash  (Mrs. Cleary’s real birthday is April 12.) 

3-A will celebrate Beverly Cleary’s 92nd birthday with a birthday cake and by totaling the number of Cleary pages the class has read.  The boys & girls use 100’s and 10’s blocks to count the number of pages they’ve read and wrap their blocks in a box with birthday paper to give to Mrs. Cleary.

Thursday 4/16              Third Grade Poetry Gig in Sadler East & West @ 10:00

All three classes join together for a choral reading of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” and sharing of students’ poetry books.  The third graders wear their poetry t-shirts and we celebrate the magic of words.  Parents are invited to join us.

 

Monday 4/20                No Classes – Faculty Professional Day

 

Wednesday 4/22           9:00-1:30 Auraria & Early Denver Field Trip

All three third grade classes travel to downtown Denver for a walking tour.  Students need to bring a jacket, hat, water bottle, pencils & 2 snacks in their backpacks.  They’ll have C.A. lunches from the Dining Hall and will be carrying their backpacks all day.  We need parents to work with groups of students on the field trip, but parents need to bring their own lunch. 

 

Thursday 4/23              Shakespeare’s Birthday & Spain’s St. George’s Day

                                    Book Plates @ 8:30

The boys & girls dress in costumes of their choosing -- a character from a play or Elizabethan attire.  Students also can be St. George, the Dragon, Don Quixote, Sancho Panza or a person from medieval Spain. 

 

St. George’s Day is the anniversary of the death of Miguel deCervantes and has been observed in Barcelona, Spain since 1714.  The gift of a rose and a book to someone is appropriate on this day as a representation of culture, beauty, intelligence, and love.  The 3-A students are asked to buy a book for someone between 6 and 8 years of age.  These books are brought to the classroom on April 18.  We will make book plates for the books before sending them to one of the children’s shelters sponsored by the Volunteers of America.   Thank you for working with your child to purchase a book for the shelter.

 

Tuesday 4/28                Marilyn Miller Storytelling about “The Beazels” @ 2:00.  Parents are invited to join us.

 

Monday 5/4                 Arts Around on Diego Rivera and Mexican-American murals @ 2:30

Tuesday 5/5                  Cinco de Mayo

The boys & girls dress in Hispanic-type clothes for Cinco de Mayo.  Gloria & Martha, the women in Housekeeping who clean the Lower School every night, will share their Hispanic culture with all three third grade classes.

 

Thursday 5/7                3-A Mock Climb up Longs Peak @ 8:30

The boys & girls dress as the explorer Stephen Long, as the naturalist and conservationist Enos Mills, as Isabella Bird in a long skirt, as Mountain Jim, as F.O. Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame, or as a contemporary mountain climber.  They also need to bring a water bottle for the mock climb.  (We hike along the Dos Chappell Trail on campus and write in our Isabella Bird Journals.  We also learn about GORP!)  Parents are invited to join the class.

 

May 11-22                     Final Math Facts Assessments:  addition, subtraction, multiplication & division

Students should complete 25 addition facts in one minute, 25 subtraction facts in one minute, 25 multiplication facts in one minute, and 25 division facts in one minute.  Testing is individual.

 

Wednesday 5/13           Glenn Miller’s Big Band Day

The three third grade classes celebrate Glenn Miller’s contributions to Colorado and to music.  (Glenn Miller lived in Fort Morgan and attended the University of Colorado.)  The girls wear dresses and the boys wear shirts & ties because CA alum Jon Williams also brings cotillion to the third graders on Big Band Day.  This event is for students & teachers only.

 

Thursday 5/14              Arts Around @ 8:30 on Art Deco

This presentation prepares the class for our Civic Center field trip when we see several examples of Art Deco architecture.

 

 

Wednesday 5/20           9:30-1:30  Third Grade Field Trip to Civic Center Park

The third graders from all three classes finish their study of Colorado by exploring Civic Center Park.  Students need to bring their own sack lunches, snacks & water.  We need parent volunteers to work with the students in groups.

 

 

Monday 5/25                School Closed - Memorial Day Holiday

 

Tuesday 5/26                Storytelling Celebration with Marilyn Miller in the classroom @ 2:00

Parents are invited to come to our performance of “A Literary Colorado: Rudyard Kipling-Mark Twain-Walt Whitman-Eugene Field.”

 

Wednesday 5/27           3-A Class Lunch  9:15-12:00

Our class uses this as a special time to end the year together.  The boys & girls bring lunches from home ---- anything and everything for a fun lunch.  We put the lunches into our backpack and head out to the Dos Chappell Trail on the C.A. campus.  We “hike” to Woody’s Pond where we eat lunch and have end-of-the-year activities.  Parents may join us.

This activity is for all third grade students and teachers.
