CA Alums Appear in The Atlantic

Two CA alumnae were recently published in back-to-back editions of The Atlantic magazine, Helen Phillips ’00, and Sarah Boxer ’76.

Phillips teaches creative writing at Brooklyn College. She is the author of The Beautiful Bureaucrat. Her Atlantic entry in May was titled “Fiction: The Wall.” According to Phillips, the short story explored “the anxiety that we are offering our children a less wholesome world than the one into which we were born.”

Sarah Boxer ’76, a writer, illustrator, and cartoonist, is a frequent contributor to The Atlantic, and is the creator of “In the Floyd Archives,” and its sequel, “Mother May I.” Her June 2016 entry was titled “Reading Proust on my Cellphone.”

Says Phillips on her experience writing at CA, “Anne Strobridge, Chip Lee, Betsey Coleman, Nancy Babbs, Chris Babbs--even after having attended college and graduate school, these remain some of the most memorable and inspiring English teachers of my life. They took us seriously and held us to the highest standard.”
