Countdown for CA Soul Down Concert

It’s almost concert day! Big Head Todd & the Monsters and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats are getting ready for their CA stopover on May 7, 2016.

First up on stage will be Big Head Todd & the Monsters. Todd Park Mohr promises that the audience will get the hits the band is known for – “Bittersweet,” “Please Don’t Tell Her,” “Resignation Superman” and more. But the band’s recent excursions into the blues (joined by guest artists B.B. King, Charlie Musselwhite, and many more) will influence the night. In a rare acoustic set, Big Head Todd will dig deep into American culture as well.

“Folk and blues have been really close to my heart. A lot of that is acoustic,” Mohr notes. It won’t be a mellow night, however: “We cover our career.”

After stacking the chairs and rolling out the dance floor in the Newton Gymnasium, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats will step out to revive soul and R&B. “I think there’s a resurgence of this style - soul and R&B and blues and all that kind of stuff is still, you know, Americana music,” Rateliff recently told NPR after the breakout hit “S.O.B.” dominated radio and led to a sold out Red Rocks concert this summer. “It’s kind of the beauty of the history of music in the United States, and what the different cultures that came here made. It’s just a bummer that it went away, so I’m excited that it’s back.”

Both of these groups are playing Red Rocks this summer, but CA’s audience will get to see them with 600 people instead of 9,000, thanks to the help of CA parent Chris Tetzeli and his firm, 7S Management. This, obviously, is a special gig, and all the more special as this one-of-a-kind concert will benefit the school’s Financial Aid Endowment.

The evening will start with the Pre-Party in the small gymnasium, with delectable fare at multiple food stations by award-winning chef Nelson Perkins, along with CA’s own chefs, Paul Worley and Alex Porter. Culinary stops will include the Continental Sausage Tasting Station, the Street Taco Station, the Pulled Pork and Bison Slider or Chili Station, or even the Health Nut Station with a variety of salad fixings. Thank you to Chris Oertel and Kristy Frankum for their work on the Pre-Party.

The evening will also include the live auction of a very limited, but unbelievable, set of five auction items, and whether you are going to the concert or not, the items are available for bidding.
  • Grammy Tickets for four to the February 2017 Grammy Awards.
  • Dinner at Your Home for 30 with entertainment by Todd Mohr (of Big Head Todd & the Monsters) and dinner prepared by award-winning chef Nelson Perkins (of Colt & Gray, Ste. Ellie).
