Great Anticipation for 2014-2015

When I was a little boy, there were few times that I was ever really ready for summer to end.  I spent my summers competing on my local swim team, camping with my family, and having neighborhood adventures with friends.  Nevertheless, when summer ended, I ALWAYS found myself enthusiastic for a new school year.

Each year, there was great anticipation about who my teachers were going to be and about the challenges that I knew awaited me in my classes.  There was a whole ritual that developed in the Davis household around the start of school. My mother would take my two brothers and me to get our school supplies at the local drugstore.  The list included pencils, crayons, notebooks, but most importantly, from our perspective as children, a metal lunch box with a superhero or movie theme (I am still sad I did not keep my Star Wars-themed lunch box from 1978).  After getting our supplies, we would end up at Sears each year to purchase some outfit of my Mom's choosing for the first day of school. "Toughskin jeans," she says now, "material like canvas and reinforced knees."

That special collection of clothes would be "lost" thereafter in the depths of my closet.  Every year, from Kindergarten to senior year, my dad would get out his camera to document his children on that historic first day, no doubt, with the intention of capturing the excitement and energy of our household. Instead, what he got were 13 years of his children with cowlicks, wearing uncomfortable new clothes, each trying his best to smile quickly so as to run off to school to reconnect with friends and meet teachers.

We are excited to welcome your children back.
